Thames Barrier Refurbishment

Thames Barrier Refurbishment

Anser were appointed by the Environment Agency in July 2010 to provide project management services for the refurbishment works of the Thames Barrier.

The £4m schemes objectives were: to assess the general condition of the Barrier Gates bearing assemblies; to replace the post-tensioning systems where required; and to install monitoring equipment to provide data to inform decisions on future maintenance.

Our role has been to provide overall project management of the scheme. This has involved close liaison with Barrier operational staff and key stakeholders. Given the flood risk to London the project had to be delivered without reducing the operational capability of the Barrier, and within fixed gate possession periods to minimise disruption to navigation . Works completed on site in February 2011 and the project was named winner of a prestigious ICE London Award in 2011.
